Century Ballroom's Offerings for December and 2011 NEW Queer Schedule

As we are drawing upon another year's end I want to mention some of the offerings that Century Ballroom has added to their extensive schedule that are specifically for the queer community.  The main thing to note is starting in January the OutDancing Gay Events are changing from Friday to Saturday evenings.  Basically there will be queer dancing on most Saturdays evenings at Century!

Remember that often you can check the Seattle Announcements Calendar for information that is not found written here as it is updated even when I am not posting the information here (as this is really a dual gig keeping the calendar current and writing tidbits).  Century Ballroom has added this last year the addition of two more dance spaces, West and East Hall both located in Century's main building Oddfellows Hall.

For the month of December check out the regular dance classes intermingled with a little bit of spice.

Anna Hurwitz - Seattle Erotic Arts Festival Director moves on to next adventure

Anna Hurwitz has been so instrumental in the building of the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival as its Festival Director and has now decided to take time to persue other interests.  For those of us that have had the utmost pleasure of attending this incredible event, volunteering or presenting art AND moreso watching it grow over the years...thank you Anna for your years of service to our community.  The Festival has grown to be an outstanding event that our community can be proud of!  We wish you well Anna in your next endeavors!  Ms T.

Greetings

As some of you may have heard, I have stepped down as director of the Festival.

Later today you’ll receive a newsletter with more information about the 2011 Festival, including a welcome from the new Festival Director, Clayton Hibbert.

Nine years ago, when I was asked to be a juror for the first year of the Festival, I had no idea how life altering my involvement would become. I’ve met the most amazing artists; had the pleasure of working with hundreds of fabulous volunteers; enjoyed discussing art with our jurors, presenters and guests; learned much from my advisors; and gathered a village of beloved friends.

But best of all, is the time I got to spend working with members of the Festival Planning Committee, both past and current. This is my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your dedication to the Festival, especially to Claire who from the very beginning made the art look fabulous (and was the person who invited me to be on the jury), to Stuart who quietly took on herculean task of logistics and finally to Clayton, who in his new role as director will continue to work tirelessly to make the Festival an extraordinary success.

I’ll still be around, and hope to be finally able to participate as an artist. For now, I’m enjoying some time off and am finally getting to unpack and reorganize the 15 boxes of Festival paraphernalia that have been gathering dust in my basement.

Please feel free to stay in touch with me at seafanna@gmail.com.

Best,

Anna Hurwitz
Festival Director (2002-2010)

Lady J to grace Cafe Metropolitan on October 21st for Ingersoll

If the gospel singers looked like Lady J I may have stuck around my church a bit longer.  She apparently has hot vocals to match her appearance.  As for Cafe Metropolitan, I like the location having been to a couple event there.  It has a nice ambiance as one would say.  I thank Ingersoll entirely for this post as I saw it and could not resist temptation by posting it immediately.  Ms T.

On Thursday, October 21 7PM at Cafe Metropolitan on Capital Hill, visionary, avante-garde gospel stylist " Our Lady J" will perform a unique concert to benefit Ingersoll Gender Center's Arts and Lecture series opening in December 2010 with Kate Bornstein.

We are thrilled to be presenting Our Lady J, vocalist and pianist, to our community for this event.  Based out of New York City, she is a rapidly rising star with a growing reputation.

Here are just a few of the praises being heaped on her:

"Stunning!" - New York Magazine

"Our Lady J is a monster musician and a great soul.  A great huge heart with a great talent. I must confess: she knocked me out.  I adore her." -- Diamanda Galas

"Our Lady J is the love child of Meat Loaf and Madonna.” - Kate Bornstein

10-10-10 Perfect 10 Date Auction Funds to benefit LBT Health at YWCA

I would like to invite, encourage and twist your lovely arms behind your backs to have you attend the upcoming second Perfect 10 Date Auction benefiting LBT Health of the YWCA next Sunday (read on).  As many of you know, Ingrid works smartly and tirelessly to fill a gap originally left by the closing of Verbena to bring much needed mammograms, breast exams and pap tests to women in need.  This event will help fund a scarcity of grant money that all non-profits are dealing with.  Please come out and support her efforts and support women in our community that need these services.

The event is an auction where you can bid on 'date' packages and enjoy entertainment presented by the  featured auctionee's.  Let me explain as I know this has been a little confusing to people.  You bid on the items and win them, not the person, sorry :~).

So, for example the lovely Fuschia Foxx, will preform and Fuchsia's date package will be a VIP package to Girl4Girl Seattle and dinner for two at Sur (to be confirmed). You can bid on her 'date' package but you do not get to have a date with her...sorry folks!  She just was darling enough to garner the package and will preform for us too!  Still following me?

A just confirmed item to be bid on is an Atlantis Events Mexico Cruise for two!  Now, that is worth either bidding on or coming to see the excitement of who will win it!

Have you ever thought about serving on a non-profit board?

There are so many ways to support the community that we live in.  With the many non-profits that have closed due to lack of financial oversight the past few years I thought I would include this on our list of resources.  I have had several conversations with community members about how powerless we have felt as supposed stewards of important necessary services have been allowed to rip off our community, our pockets and our overall faith in others.  While this training will not replace personal integrity, it is nice to know that it is in place.  Ms T.

Do you want to do more in your community? Ever thought about serving on a non-profit board?

Then think about participating in The Bridge!

The Bridge is a dynamic training program designed to give you the basics in nonprofit and government board service. Step on up!

Why board service?

Impact. There is nothing better than making a difference in a child's life through tutoring, or enhancing your neighborhood by cleaning up a park. But think about the impact you could have if you served on a board that determined how many children received tutoring, or which parks were receiving the most funding? On a board, you give direction, you raise the money and YOU are our community's stewards.

Without boards, our community institutions would fall apart... do you really want to live in a community without them?

The Course
In a series of trainings, you'll learn about roles and responsibilities of nonprofit and public board members in addition to completing personal skill and interest assessments.

The Bridge coursework focuses on:
- financial and legal responsibilities
- governance structures
- fundraising and public budgeting
- personal reflection

Following the training, we connect you with board opportunities. Then again, you might decide that board service isn't for you. But at least you know!

When/where
Fall Registration is NOW open!

Tues 9/14, 9/28, 10/12, 6-9pm OR
Saturdays 11/13 & 11/20, 10am-2pm

The class takes place at the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center building at 19th and Madison on Capitol Hill - 1625 19th Ave Seattle, WA 98122.

The Bridge fee is $150 - includes meals & resources. (A limited number of scholarships are available.)

Already sitting on a board or have an MPA?
The Bridge is an introductory course - if you have an MPA or have already served on a nonprofit board, this might not be the class for you.

Gen Silent Film Showing - Save the Date November 22nd Monday

Gen Silent will be showing on Monday, November 22, 2010, 2-4 PM, at
NorthShore Senior Center
10201 E. Riverside Drive
Bothell, WA,
in the Multi-Purpose Room
Cost: FREE
Movie time: 63 minutes; discussion following

Gen Silent is the new LGBT documentary from award-winning director and documentary filmmaker Stu Maddox. Gen Silent reveals how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders, who fought the first battles for equality now face so much fear about discrimination that they are hiding their lives again. Thousands are dying earlier than their straight counterparts because they are afraid to ask for help. But there is a growing number of individuals trying to build awareness and wake up the long-term and health care industries to their plight.

What's in a name? Ask Portia DeGeneres.

According to Diva Magazine which is Europe's hot lesbian mag since 1994 lovely Portia De Rossi who is Ellen's wife will be taking Ellen's last name.  Of course, I am sure this information was all over the US news via TMZ but it was much more interesting to read it in a glossy UK edition devoted to hot lesbian women. So here it is...without pics, darn.

Having filed a petition with the Los Angeles County Superior Court to change her name, the actress formerly known as Portia De Rossi is now Portia DeGeneres.

The request for a change of name was granted Thursday in LA County Superior Court, report TMZ.

The Australian actress, who found fame on the TV series Ally McBeal, was born Amanda Lee Rogers, and changed her name to Portia de Rossi whilst still in her teens.

She married Ellen Degeneres in 2008.

In other news, according to Advocate.com, the star is writing an emotional tell-all autobiography that will describe the 37-year-old’s past struggles with anorexia, her sexuality and her marriage.

Laughter Therapy via Yoga

For those of you that were able to attend the LBT Rainbow Health Fair we enjoyed a wonderful 'laughter circle'.  Even in the short time we practiced laughing, many of us felt we benefited from practicing laughing and experiencing the joy that laughter brings in any form.  Laughing just makes one feel good!

The Phinney Neighborhood Center offers a laughter yoga class on the 2nd Tuesday's taught by Teresa Verde based on the model that laughter has health benefits.  The Laughter Yoga class provides:

an explanation of the tremendous health benefits, how laughter and humor are highly effective coping mechanisms, the role of laughter in the workplace and even how smiling is beneficial; followed by a joyous laughter session consisting of gentle stretching, yoga-type deep breathing and playful laughter exercises.

Like all Yoga's, Laughter Yoga practices a combination of gentle stretching, yoga-type breathing, chanting and only differs by including laughter exercises. Yoga is a body/mind/spirit connection that leaves you feeling better after the class.  You need to bring to class a willingness to laugh for no reason and water. Check out the article on One Thousand Laughs in The New Yorker August 30th issue.

LBT Mobile Screening at Wildrose on December 11th

LBT Mobile Screening at Wildrose December 11th
At our May mobile screening we saw 15 women and we could have seen more!  For those of you thinking of coming to a mobile screening, take a look a this comment from one of the women that was served at our May 3rd screening.
I had never been to anything like a mobile health screening before and did not know what to expect.  I was pleasantly surprised as it was much less crowded than my doctors office and there was no wait!  I was one of the last appointments on Monday and can't remember the last time my doctor's office provided me with my test results so fast (only 3 days to my mail box)!  Plus, they provided resource information if I had any questions.  I certainly will use a mobile screening again as I was treated so well and the staff was very friendly.

Alki and Spud's go hand in hand and they will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary on Wednesday the 15th with a number of festivities and giveaways.  I have fond memories from my childhood of my parents taking me to Spud's as a treat as they knew the owners once upon a time.  Times were different --  we did not eat out as often as we do today and it was a special treat when we did.  I have a certain feeling of nostalgia with some of the places that are still standing in Seattle.  Here's to Spud's and those fabulous french fries.  Ummm ummm good.  Ms T.

Join Alki Spud, Wednesday September 15, for a full day of festivities featuring a net full of prizes and giveaways, including a proclamation from Seattle Mayor McGinn naming the official day 'Alki Spud Fish and Chips Day' in Seattle.

Other anniversary goodies include:
o free prize packs for the first 75 customers;
o $1.75 fish and chips with the donation of a canned food item to the West Seattle Food Bank ($2.75 without a canned food item, with $1 going to the food bank);
o a live marimba band playing rhythmic beach tunes; and
o a 75th anniversary prize wheel in which customers can spin to win one-a-kind collectibles and food prizes!

New GIRL4GIRL Dances at Club Sur - Saturday September 11th & Sun Sept 19th

I am hoping that GIRL4GIRL's new parties will be HOT as they are hitting the floor running with some sexy and fun new dances over the next couple weeks starting with a repeating second Saturday dance this weekend.  G4G has changed hands and with the transition comes new energy and ideas.  I am going to give the dances a shot and am excited about the upcoming Sweet Tea Dances starting on Sunday's beginning the 19th of this month.

For those of us that looked forward to Sunday's just because we loved to dance to our favorite disco, funk and R&B tunes at the Timberline embraced by our Sunday best friends -- there is HOPE afloat!  Plus, 75cent beer's are back!  Dust off those party shoes and suck in your bottom lip as I know we have missed and have since mourned for the days of the original Tea Dances at the Timberline.  I am crossing my fingers and toes that these new dances will run a close second.  Of course, only if we show up and make them so!  Oh Santa...I have been so good this year...grant me an early present and I will be a very very good bad girl.  Ms T.

As our society becomes more conscious of how we as a whole affect each other and our planet, there will need to be organizations that exemplify these attributes and the intent of the Fremont LoveFest is to be at the forefront of this movement.

Lamar Van Dyke is headed to BOLDFest - Vancouver, BC Sept 9 - 12, 2010

I, as many of you in a similar age area may be saying the same thing...how the hell did I get here?  Now I find myself announcing that Lamar (if you have to ask Lamar WHO, you are not keeping up) is headed to Canada for an over 50's conference for lesbians.  They are calling the conference BOLDFest...which is a sneaky way of having 'old' in the title.  I wondered if just by merely living past a certain age and still identifying with some kind of sexuality one was considered remarkably bold?  I am though of the belief it is the HOW to which one lives that is important and the guest speakers fit the bill for being BOLD in many ways as their bios detail.

Back to my thoughts on Lamar and the other BOLD speakers she is scheduled with.  At first I tried to paraphrase the accomplishments of these women and erased (ok, back spaced to be accurate) what I had written.  I felt that what Pat Hogan and Claire Robson the creatrix's of The Bold Conference/BoldFest provided should be left intact about these powerful women.  I have been on Pat's email list for some time and have great respect and admiration for what she/they do north of our border.  This should be a fabulous weekend if you can attend.

On the Bold webpage it says 'At BOLD we like to challenge our own beliefs and stereotypes. That's what keeps things interesting!'  There are always events that are more fun or interesting when you think of certain people being at them.  Lamar Van Dyke is one of those people and I am thinking that our sisters to the north are going to be having a fine time this weekend.  Ms T.

Pat Hogan and Claire Robson -- the schemers, dreamers, schleppers and organizers behind BOLD!
Welcome to another year of lesbian fun and adventure!!

Formerly known as the BOLD Conference, BOLDFest is a dynamic, educational, some-times controversial, always entertaining, cool North American event that attracts lesbians and dykes from across Canada and the US for a weekend of learning, laughing, loving and much more. Thus, our new name. Hope you like it. Actually, many of you called it BOLDFest first and...we figured you knew best!

TERESA TRULL and BARBARA HIGBIE are early pioneers of the women’s music movement. TERESA joined the Olivia Records collective in 1975 and recorded THE WAYS A WOMAN CAN BE in 1976. Her 2nd recording was LET IT BE KNOWN in 1980. In 1982 Barbara and Teresa met and subsequently recorded their first album together, UNEXPECTED. BARBARA was already a well known Windham Hill recording artist and together for many years they toured as a very popular duo in both the the Women’s Music and the Folk Music audiences. They reunited in 1999 to record PLAYTIME. Through years of festivals, benefits and independent productions, they have supported and performed for women’s audiences for a combined 34 years.

COLONEL (RET) GRETHE CAMMERMEYER -Whidbey Island, WA
Challenged - and reversed - the U.S. military's anti-gay policy when she came out as a lesbian when applying for a higher military position. Her bravery brought the issue to public attention and inspired the making of the movie, Serving in Silence - based on Grethe's published autobiography - in which Cammermeyer was played by Glen Close. Barbara Streisand was one of the executive producers. This film won 3 Emmy Awards, nominated for 3 Golden Globes awards and received the prestigious Peabody award.

She was reinstated to the National Guard in June 1994 and served as Chief Nurse of the 164th MASH until May 1996. Dr. Cammermeyer began working with neurologically impaired patients whom have remained the focus of her clinical interest and research ever since. She earned a Master of Arts in 1976, specializing in neuroscience nursing with focus on epilepsy and cognitive impairment after which she transferred to the VAMC in San Francisco where she coordinated the care of brain tumor patients and was the Neuro-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist. As a result of that work, Grethe was the first recipient of the Administrators Award for Excellence in Nursing in 1985, selected out of 34,000 registered nurses in the VA. Cammermeyer ran for Congress in 1997.

She is now a national and international speaker on issues of civil liberties and human rights. Grethe and her life partner Diane operate an Extended Adult Family Home on Whidbey Island WA. Find out more about Grethe's life and awards at: www.cammermeyer.com.

LAMAR VAN DYKE - Seattle, WA

Is a 'big old dyke who used to live in a big old van' in the late 70's, early 80's, careening around North America searching for 'dyke heaven.' The process produced the Van Dykes, a band of extreme lesbians traveling the highways of Mexico, America, and Canada. They spent time at 'women's land' along the way, connecting with other dykes who were doing the same thing.

'I guess you could say my career as a lesbian really took off after we sang 'I Enjoy Being a Dyke' at the Brunswick Tavern in Toronto. I don't know what we were thinking; after all, the Brunswick is a straight working-class beer hall, and we quickly found ourselves unceremoniously dumped into the back of a paddy wagon. After a couple of years, I managed to follow that act by creating the Van Dykes, with Ange Spalding, and we took off for the road trip of a lifetime. As other women joined us, everyone changed their last name to Van Dyke and the saga raged on. When the inevitable spontaneous combustion erupted, I ended up in Seattle, WA. where I established a tattoo and piercing shop on Pike Street called Tattoo You. From my very first moment in Seattle, I was overactive in the establishment and celebration of the leather dyke community. After 18 years of business, I'm traveling, writing, painting and basically doing whatever I want.'

You can read about Lamar and the history of the Van Dykes, and their importance to the emergence of lesbian feminism in a March '09 New Yorker magazine article at www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/03/02/090302fa_fact_levy.
 MARION LAY - Vancouver, BC

A two time Olympian and an Olympic bronze medallist in swimming, has been inducted in three Halls of Fame and has won numerous leadership awards, including the International Olympic Committee's Women and Sport Trophy for the Americas and the Canadian Sport Award for Leadership in Sport. President of Think Sport Ltd, she is currently an adjunct professor in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia, a member of the executive committee of ParticipACTION and honourary board member of both Promotion Plus - the BC Organization for Girls and Women in Sport - and the BC Games Society.

As well, she was the founding President and CEO of 2010 Legacies Now, chair of the Vancouver 2010 Bid Committee and a member of the board of directors of VANOC, the organizing committee of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games. She is a founder of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), founder of WomenSport International, founder and chair of the National Sport Centre-Greater Vancouver (now the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific), and a past executive member of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

MARY BENSON - Vancouver, BC
An avid athlete since childhood, Mary Benson played road hockey on the Prairies, was captain of her ice hockey team in Winnipeg, played on several of the Mabel League's lesbian fast-pitch softball teams after moving to BC in the mid-1980s. She was a jock. Then, nearly a decade ago, Mary's life changed forever after she received a serious brain injury which left part of her left frontal lobe and a portion of her brain stem injured. She had to overcome life-altering obstacles She had to learn how to walk and talk again.

At GF Strong Rehabilitation Hospital Mary started in a cross-country skiing program for people with disabilities. Very apprehensive at first, she said "No way!" But, with a lot of encouragement from her partner Kathy and her therapist to try it out, she did. Since returning to sports as a paralympic athlete, she has won a silver medal at the 2010 Paralympic Nordic ski nationals in Alberta and placed eighth in the Paralympic World Cup in Germany. She made Canada's 2010 Nordic-Cross Paralympic Ski Team in February.

Mary's never lost her sense of humour; her laugh is contagious! You'll hear it at BOLDFest 2010's Friday luncheon when Mary is called to the podium to be recognized as a Woman in Motion!. Truer words were never spoken. Learn more on Mary's blog at skiwithmaryb.shawwebspace.ca.

2 articles on The Kids Are All Right, our voices can be heard and should be

You will find two posts on the newly released film The Kids Are All Right.  For those of you with children in your lives this may effect you in one way and for those that have been fighting for equality this may be seen as another stepping stone.  After I had created my first posting GLAAD posted another article regarding a negative review of the film that took 'offensive' a bit beyond the film.  There is an opportunity for your voice to be heard and I hope you will read the contents of both articles.  Ms T.

Make our voices heard to The 'New York Post' offensive critique of The Kids Are All Right

As a follow up to my previous post on the newly released moving The Kids Are All Right, GLAAD has posted an important article regarding New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser's biased and nasty review of The Kids Are All Right.  Using terms as 'gay agenda' and asking movie goers to 'choose their lifestyles wisely' Andrea Peyser is offensive and seems to have an anti - gay bias with her film review.

We have the opportunity to write to the New York Post and to Andrea Peyser.  All information is contained in the article I have posted in it's entirety.  I thank GLAAD for their great coverage and for this post.  Ms T.

This week New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser wrote a highly offensive critique of the newly released movie, The Kids Are All Right, a movie starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo.

As we told you in a previous blog, in the film, by out filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko, Bening and Moore play a longtime couple who began a family through donor insemination, with each mother bearing a child. As teenagers, the couple’s children decide to track down their donor (Ruffalo) without telling their mothers. The film deals with how the family copes once the donor enters their lives.

The Kids Are All Right has received rave reviews from well-established newspapers like the  New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. While it is nearly impossible to create a film that pleases every critic, NY Post writer Andrea Peyser expressed her dislike for the film while simultaneously disparaging gay and lesbian families. It’s clear that Peyser’s objection to the film goes far beyond fair criticism and reflects her own personal anti-gay bias.

Peyser is certainly entitled to her opinion but her cheap shots at gay families were over the top and unacceptable.  Here’s an extended excerpt from the column, illustrating the offensive tone. Peyser describes 'The Kids Are All Right as:

sort of a cross between 'Leave it to Beaver' and 'Kittens With Whips.' Choose your lifestyle wisely, moviegoers. For this film is set to go down in history as the first major motion picture to make a family led by gay women — A-lister Annette Bening, as the control-freak doctor Nic, 'wed' to A-lister Julianne Moore, as the weepy, infantilized Jules — seem not just normal, but close to godly.

It reaches further than the gay-cowboy romp 'Brokeback Mountain,' whose characters maintained a sense of otherness while shielding the kids from their shenanigans. In this movie, exposing kids is the entire point.

And this is how Hollywood does an end run around morality.

'Hollywood has set the stage for the gay agenda, nothing new,' said Laura Bailey, Brooklyn mom of two boys. 'Why do you think they did propaganda films in the 1940s? They’re setting the new norm.'

'The movie industry is doing its best to undermine the American family, said Patricia Whitehead, Connecticut mom of two girls. 'Hollywood — we don’t care about the sick lives you lead behind closed doors. Just don’t bring children into it.'

This brazen attempt at trend-setting comes as national polls show Americans oppose gay marriage, half of us strongly. Support for it was at 47 percent in this year’s Washington Post/ABC News poll — but fully two-thirds favored civil unions, in which gay couples enjoy most rights of marrieds without having to stand under the chuppah.

It doesn’t take a genius to glean the truth: Folks are happy with gays living together. But bringing children into the equation is a deal-breaker.
The column fails to include any gay parents, any adults who were raised by gay parents or anyone supportive of LGBT people. It also leaves out a very important fact: Nearly every credible authority on child health and social services (including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Child Welfare League of America) has determined that a parent’s sexual orientation has nothing to do with the ability to be a good parent.

Peyser also uses the offensive term 'lifestyle' to describe gay and lesbian lives, and concludes her piece with yet another viewpoint against gay parents:

I went to see it in Chelsea, where the crowd was generally smitten. But therapist Karen Kopitz saw through the gay proselytizing.

'I’m not anti-gay,' she said. 'But I don’t think you can compensate for the male-female role model.'

Please write to Andrea Peyser and the New York Post and voice your concerns about this offensive column.  Tell them to stop using this media platform to denigrate loving gay families.

The Kids Are All Right came with a resouce guide but my kid did not

On July 12th, GLAAD issued a resource guide for the new film The Kids Are All Right.  I admit I feel a bit of a personal pull with this film's topic having lived some parts of this story in my own life.  I do watch these type of Hollywood flicks to see how they turn out, if they insist on the crappy Hollywood endings we have all become so nauseatingly accustomed to seeing or if they take the bold smart right risk and actually dare to represent our lives fairly and perhaps with compassion.

In my own life I knew that I had wanted to give birth to a child if possible but in the 19 dark hundred 70's when I came out it was not politically very correct to want to have a child in some politically queer circles.  One was thought of having some subversive straight gene and if you looked like I did then you were definitely suspect (femme).  I still held the desire close to my heart but did not believe it would come to fruition.

In the very early 80's I was at the home birth of a dear friend who was indeed a trail blazer by having a child and raising her mainly as a single parent with great determination.  She even fostered children when her daughter was a bit older as an out lesbian foster mother.  It did show me that it was possible and also was an example of how much work parenting was.

Many of us know both of them as they are still in our community today but visiting a far away land (Hi M & L).  It was fabulous to see the grown up baby come to my birthday party at the Timberline in 2004 as an adult woman - oh my god, that is enough to make one feel their age.  She has turned out to be a beautiful young woman with her mothers' love of travel very much a part of her.  The apple and the tree is a true story there.

By the early 90's I was in a stable relationship and felt very blessed that my partner wanted to have a child too.  It was not like it is today where there are tons of queer folk having children, we were still the exception.  There were not resources readily available regarding donor insemination, what the options were, how to make the best choice for your own situation or how to live with it after wards so I started a group for lesbians that wanted to have children.

Several of us in the group became pregnant and were grateful that we had each other to sort through what felt was the 'right way' for our lives.  We each utilized different choices in donor options.  It was still not the most conventional or popular thing to do - you had to search a bit to find others like you, so much of my support once I became pregnant started to become from straight counterparts pregnant and having children.  This was not too unusual I soon found out by talking with other gay families I met.

In a few short years things started to change dramatically.  Many more queer people started having children by birth or adopting.  Now there are tons of groups and support available if you are queer and want to be a parent.  We made the decision for our family that worked for us and have a known donor who our daughter knows as her dad.  She is grateful that she has this relationship with him and I feel that we made the right decision for our family.  I believe strongly that every situation is different and people have to do what they believe will work for them.

My life has been enriched by my relationship with my daughter and I feel so fortunate that I was able to have a child.  She has brought joy to my life and also to the other adults that round out her family.  A couple years ago I overheard her saying 'After I get permission from the 'lesbian brady bunch' I will call you back'.  Unbeknown to me that is how she referred to her family AND she had nicknamed each of us, her biggest fans and bleacher warmers.  I will spare you the nicknames.

As I was writing I reflected on truly how far things have come in a relatively short period of time.  I certainly do believe in continuing to strive and push until we are treated 100% equally.  Sometimes it is easy to think of how far we have to go to gain total equality but when I look at my daughter it tells me how truly far we have come.  Ms T.

“What’s so interesting about this movie is that it really highlights how important a family is. What a long-term relationship is,” said Moore in an interview with AfterEllen.com. “What it means to stick it out with somebody; to forgive people’s mistakes; to punish people within your family; to guide them toward growing up and leaving after you’ve been so attached — all of these things. The film is a really interesting exploration of that.”

According to Deadline.com, The Kids Are All Right opened on seven screens this past Friday and scored the highest per screen gross this year so far with $72,127 per screen. If its box office performance is any indication, The Kids Are All Right underscores the desire among American audiences to see lesbian stories reflected on screen. The film will be expanding into 11 new markets this week. For more information, please visit the film’s official website.
