Sky Valley GLBTQ Alliance has first support meeting Saturday November 19th

How did the Monroe Monitor come to feature an article about an upcoming GLBTQ group that is starting this Saturday and wildly yet, previously post an retraction to a bias ad they accepted that was derogatory towards gays?  You would have to know Holly Teige, a true force of nature that is determined to make changes where she sees a need.  While she did not foresee her new role as an activist, I believe it suits her well as she is very passionate about her beliefs and helping others.

I met Holly a couple years ago at an event and instantly felt a kinship to her and her partner Nef!  I knew she was going to make any situation better that she was involved in and she certainly has.  Holly has found various ways to help others adding to her full family plate as she has 4 children and Nef has 2.  Activism isn't far from Holly's long term goal of working with under-served communities as an attorney and she is well on her way as a full time student currently on the Dean's list.  She will graduate in March of 2013 with a degree in Society, Ethics and Human Behavior.


Holly is starting her second group for GLBTQ and they are holding their first meeting this Saturday, November 19th.  The Monroe Monitor wrote an open article about the isolation that gays face in rural areas, the need for inclusiveness and how the area church's are opening their doors to assist.  I encourage you to read the article for yourself and to let any of your friends that live in the area to know about this meeting.  This is a great step in the right direction for our smaller community members to feel less isolation, meet like minded others and gain community.

The Sky Valley GLBTQ Alliance will be a monthly meeting with the day/time to be determined by the membership.  One estimate is that 3500 GLBTQ people live between Everett and the Pass.  Holly hopes that people that live in Everett, Granite Falls, Goldbar, Snohomish, Lake Stevens, Fulton, Startup, Index, Skykomish, and everywhere between the Highway 2 corridor will benefit from the meetings.  All are welcome and you will find future meetings on the Seattle Announcements Calendar!

This is not Holly's first effort at attempting to fill what she saw as a need that she had - and she figured others must have as well.  Holly started a Meetup group, Coming Out After 30 for folks that came out after 30 years of age.  The group celebrated their 1 year anniversary last month with almost a hundred members.  They meet on the last Saturday of every month on Capitol Hill.

The group provides more than the monthly meetings as they also help newly out members feel comfortable by attending social events together such as Inferno Hotflash Dances.  While Inferno Hotflash Dances are known for being more welcoming than most bar dances, they attend as a cohesive group so women will feel even more comfortable at their first (possible) bar experience in their new "out" identity.  The group though is open to all genders and orientations and currently has trans, bi, lesbian, gay, and asexuals ranging in age from 20's to 60's.

Although the members may identify differently from each other Holly "honors that coming out is ongoing" and believes there are the same social reactions to the different phases of the process.  Members often have the similar theme of "a lack of family support" which presents different challenges that talking to others in the same situation helps with.  You can reach Holly at holly.teige@gmail.com.

Outdoor Movies at Cal Anderson Park means summer is here?

There are 3 remaining movies as part of the Rock n Roll Fantasy at Cal Anderson Park that are put on by Three Dollar Cinema starting at dusk.  I do enjoy packing a picnic and sprawling on the grass watching a cult classic or at least a gay cult considered classic under the beautiful starry warm Seattle nights.  Ok...so I lapsed into a bit of fantasy as I know we are a wee bit unhappy with our weather this summer.

You can still pack a nice snack, bring blankets and enjoy the wonderful people watching opportunity (pwo) as it will be splendid!

Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative is hosting Electricidad

Electricidad was at ACT last weekend and is playing as part of the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 6:30pm.  There is a dinner at 5:30 with the play to immediately follow.  This is a FREE event.

A Chicano take on the Greek tragedy Electra, Luís Alfaro's Electricidad is a brutally modern adaptation of the classic revenge saga set within gang culture of the 'barrio'. One of the foremost Latino playwrights in the U.S. and winner of the MacArthur 'Genius Award', Luís Alfaro's eye-opening rendition situates the iconic characters in the present-day world of the 'Cholo' where the South Side Locos are Kings and Spanglish rules. Electricidad is mourning her father's body in her front yard, much to the dismay of the vecinos (neighbors) and her mother Clemencia, who was rumored to have had him killed to establish her power in the gang hierarchy. A comical bilingual chorus called 'El Chisme' gossips and tries to save their barrio from inevitable cycles of violence.

eSe Teatro's presentation of Electricidad is a blend between a staged reading and a fully produced play, presented in Spanglish.

The Other City - Free Film Screening tonight April 27th in Columbia City

Excuse the second posting today but I felt this was an important event that some of you may enjoy attending tonight (or on May 17th).  HIV/AIDS is still a health crisis and this film addresses the story of those that are continuing to fight the good fight.  It is followed by a discussion and looks like a good event to be attending.  Ms T.

Come to a free community screening of the new documentary, THE OTHER CITY- a tribute to those who stand up to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS every day.
In every city, there’s another city that visitors rarely see. But this other city isn’t just anywhere – it’s in Washington, D.C. The very city that is home to the capital of the most powerful country in the world has an HIV/AIDS rate that is not only the nation’s highest, but rivals some African countries.

THE OTHER CITY tells the stories of people who haven’t let lack of government assistance stop them, and have taken matters into their own hands. This film was directed by Susan Koch and produced by BET founder Sheila C. Johnson.

This 90 minute documentary will take place at Life Enrichment Bookstore on Wednesday, April 27th and at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 17th.

Both screenings will be preceded by a community discussion. We will also feature community based organizations that will provide information on HIV/AIDS testing, education, resources, programs, etc.

Autumn Needles at Wild at Heart, March 13th reading from her Yogic Bliss and Sexual Healing fabulous book

At the last Rainbow Health Fair we were honored to have Autumn Needles read from her newly released book Yogic Bliss and Sexual Healing.  At the beginning of the reading I could tell that the circle of women did not quite know what to expect and soon we were laughing, relaxed and yes...a bit flushed.  The room got hot very fast and in no time we were bonding like old friends over stories shared with a familiar theme. 

Autumn has an incredible way with describing sexual experiences that I believe are often thought about but kept closeted.  She is frank, edgy with a twist of humor that keeps the spirit light.  A true delight to listen to and be a part of.  It was indeed an exciting read and I felt honored to be at her first reading.  I hope many of you will be able to attend this FREE event.  (Don't forget it is the beginning of Daylight Savings).

Autumn Needles, RYT, began practicing yoga at age 12 for its physical healing properties and was hooked by its calming and centering effects as well as for its integrative life philosophy.  She received her yoga instructor certification from the Nosara Yoga Institute in 2006 and has been teaching ever since. The core of her personal beliefs is to live fully and pleasurably within her body and to move with joy and gratitude. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., is the first Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel and tenured Professor of Religion, and College Curator at Morehouse College since 1979.  He has also been an Instructor at the Morehouse School of Medicine in the Master of Public Health Program.  For forty-six years, Dr. Carter has studied and worked in fourteen American universities, colleges, and professional schools, spoken at over one-hundred different colleges, universities, and seminaries, and received over five-hundred speaking engagements from eighteen denominations, and traveled to thirty-five foreign countries. He has made over sixty radio and television appearances, including nationwide in England, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and continent wide in Africa.

'Sounds Outside' Saturdays at Cal Anderson Park 1pm July 17

Cal Anderson Park has become a place for events ranging from Bat n Rouge, a fun and zany fundraiser of softball featuring Drag Queens and Dykes playing softball for the Capitol Hill Alano Club to Three Dollar Bill Cinema Outdoor Movies.  Add to the roster 'Sounds Outside' tomorrow July 17th at 1pm brought to us by members of the Monktail collective and we have another reason to be outside enjoying each other and what Cal Anderson Park has to offer - community gather together.

The Jazz Composers Ensemble and the Zubatto Syndicate, two bands well known for being especially creative will play. Wayne Horvitz’s Sonny Clark tribute band is on the schedule and there is a New York band called Father Figures that will be new to our area.  Come out and enjoy!  Ms T.

I now feel like summer is here, don't you?  Certainly with this Friday being the start of the Three Dollar Bill Outdoor Cinema at Cal Anderson Park makes me feel all picnic-ky and outdoorsy.  I LOVE Three Dollar Bill Cinema and all they do!  Any way we can support them, I am all for it!  All screenings are FREE and begin at sunset (around 8:30/9pm).  I hope to see many of you there!  I thank them for all the following information!

Saturday the 26th Events - boi Di's at Dyke March

The Dyke March is always a draw on Saturday before Pride and this year is no exception!  As previously mentioned a crowd pleaser Lamar Van Dyke will be emceeing the event and will have on hand boi Di who if you are not familiar with currently, stay tuned as you will be.  Boi Di is our recently crowned WA State Ms Leather 2010 who won the title in March to rave reviews with her 'fantasy' scene.  You will see boi Di tomorrow and will be hearing much more about her service work in the community here at the GayZette over the next year.

There are 2 events that I want to immediately draw your attention to that boi Di is involved in.  There will be a raffle and dancers will be dancing for tips at the August 21st Hotflash dance from 6-10 pm at Neighbors.  I will post more information on this event soon.  This will be a great night to attend!

Rainbow Health Fair features Local Author and Yoga Instructor Autumn Needles

One of the many exciting things about the Rainbow Health Fair is the people and services that it brings together.  I happen to be a lover of fabulous news and there is plenty to go around this Saturday!  Our own Autumn Needles has penned a hot off the presses book, Yogic Bliss and Sexual Healing!  She will read an excerpt from her book for the FIRST TIME and follow with a FREE breathing instruction. I know I will be enjoying this as it has so many applications to life...ummm...did I say which I meant, the book or the breathing?

Rainbow Health Fair is delighted to have local author and yoga instructor Autumn Needles honor us for her very first reading of her hot off the presses just released book, Yogic Bliss and Sexual Healing!  She will read an excerpt and lead a FREE workshop from 2pm - 3pm on basic yoga breathing practices, or pranayama.  You can find her at the Health Fair after 1:30pm to visit with and answer your questions.

Autumn Needles, RYT, owner of HomeBodyYoga, began practicing yoga at age 12 for its physical healing properties and was hooked by its calming and centering effects as well as for its integrative life philosophy.  She received her yoga instructor certification from the Nosara Yoga Institute in 2006 and has been teaching ever since.  She offers private yoga sessions tailored to your needs and specializes in adapting traditional yoga practices to the requirements of each person.  Regular classes are currently only available at LAFitness, but she periodically offers specialized workshops focusing on particular aspects of yoga practice and philosophy.  She recently authored a book, Yogic Bliss and Sexual Healing, available now through Fanny Press and on Amazon.com, which draws on her background in yoga philosophy, her perspective on sex and sexuality and her own life experiences.

There has been an explosion of transgender people on talk shows, dramas, and especially reality television. We’ll screen some recent episodes of reality programs that feature transwomen as cast members and discuss how this representation affects the whole trans community.

Betty White on Saturday Night Live - 11:30 pm Channel 5

For those of us that think Facebook has no value, we can remember that Betty White will be on Saturday Night Live tonight due to a campaign started on Facebook.  Close to 500,000 people cast their desire for Betty to host and she acquiesced.  I think it so rocks that at 88 years old Betty is getting acknowledged while she is alive and can feel the love of her fans.  She has always delivered naughtiness in just the right way that she doesn't offend (I actually don't mind the offending but...).

I have enjoyed so many of her shows over the years.  It is NOT reality and for that I am grateful.  She has a new show beginning soon and I am thrilled that someone of her talent will be on TV again.  I will be watching.

Here's to Betty!  I will be watching her tonight and smiling as it feels good to know there are people like Betty in the world and people like us that care.

15th Anniversary of Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk May 14th and 15th

We have such a rich community of Art Walks in our communities.  This next week the Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk will be on Friday/Saturday May 14- 15th and will be celebrating fifteen years along Greenwood and Phinney Avenues on Friday evening, May 14, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 15, from noon to 5:00 p.m.
