At our May mobile screening we saw 15 women and we could have seen more!  For those of you thinking of coming to a mobile screening, take a look a this comment from one of the women that was served at our May 3rd screening.

I had never been to anything like a mobile health screening before and did not know what to expect.  I was pleasantly surprised as it was much less crowded than my doctors office and there was no wait!  I was one of the last appointments on Monday and can't remember the last time my doctor's office provided me with my test results so fast (only 3 days to my mail box)!  Plus, they provided resource information if I had any questions.  I certainly will use a mobile screening again as I was treated so well and the staff was very friendly.

YWCA LBTHealth OutReach a SUCCESS!

Any of you that have been following the GayZette or know me understand that maintaining health and well being is close to my heart and this particular health screening is very dear to me after losing Mudd to metastasized breast cancer earlier this year.  My bra is off to Ingrid who works tirelessly in our community with warmth, understanding and a sexy accent to boot for making it easier for those to maintain basic health services with dignity.  What follows is her recap of the YWCA LBTHealth OutReach on Saturday.  Ms T

Wildrose 12/12/09 OutReach Day

December the 12th turned out to be the Santa Claus pub crawl. It was very funny to watch hundreds of Santa Clauses in all sorts of outfits coming by and having a good time.
The LBT focused Wildrose screening on Saturday the 12th of December, turned out very successful. I want to thank Martha and Shelley from the Wildrose, for their generosity and for opening their doors for us. It was great to work with Beth Kruse again, albeit the only time this year. I want to thank Michelle Atkinson for volunteering to help with the intakes at the last moment.
This mobile event turned out so well I think in part by using the internet, through list serves and yahoo groups to advertise this LBT focused mobile screening event.  I feel this community tends to be more online than some of the others. From last years screening we had only one client return to us.
We served 16 people in total, 14 BCHP and two insurance.
Two clients were referred to Swedish for diagnostic mammograms. 1 client refused the mammogram.  There were 14 LBT with 2 trans individuals.
14 people filled in the after screening survey it was 99% positive. Topics most people were interested in were health insurance, affordable housing, employment programs, educational opportunities, LBT health and nutrition.
At the request from one of our clients I put out a donation jar and to my surprise people made some donations. We will continue to do this and see how it goes.

Country Doctor Provides no or low cost healthcare on Thursdays

There is FREE and Sliding scale Health Care available for those in our community*. 

Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 offers primary and naturopathic care for the LGBTQ community.  The providers have been serving the LGBTQ community for many years. Cost is sliding scale - no one is turned away for lack of funds and they are very accustomed and adept at providing skilled medical services to our community. For information and to make an appointment, call 206-299-1600.

Some of the things you can be seen for besides regular health screenings are:
hormone initiation and management
Sexually transmitted disease testing, treatment and counseling
Lifestyle counseling to optimize health and wellbeing

Urgh...note to self, once I "publish post" if I make a change to the post it resends it to all my RSS subscribers.  I did this yesterday and found myself comparing my own post...what a freak and perfectionist I am.  

Dang...and I called Lisa a Kock instead of Koch in the post heading (pronounced cock, I am sure)...there is no spell check for that (or for hitting the send too soon as I wish other people had figured out by now).  Where is my lil person on my shoulder to keep me from doing that?  I need a HouseDyke just for this!  When I do my contest for what a HouseDyke does, this will definitely be on my list under the subheading "impulse control".

Tristan Silverman occupies the space where gender, sexuality, Judaism, and art converge. Trained as a documentary filmmaker, screenwriter, and novelist, Tristan's poetry addresses the humanness of flaw, the fluidity of identity, and the reality of coming of age queer and American. Tristan exploded onto the Chicago spoken word scene in 2006, quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in the poetry slam community and as an important voice for individuals who find themselves outside of the mainstream. She represented Chicago at two National Poetry Slam competitions, placing 5th in the nation with her team in 2008. An organizer and teaching artist as well as an award-winning poet, Silverman tours and conducts workshops across the country through organizations and events including the Estrogen Festival (Michigan and Chicago), Lesbians Against Cancer Association, BENT, Young Chicago Authors, Louder than a Bomb youth poetry festival, Sparkle (Washington D.C.), GenderFusions, and Mothertongue, as well as colleges and universities nationwide.

Bent has performances on Friday and Saturday.  Janet Qualman will be in Saturday's show and use her name when you order tickets for either show as the performance teams are competing for an extra performance night.

Starting Friday Leather Reign begins which will run through the weekend and looks like they have a great schedule. 

Speaking of games...

The L Games is at the Garage and this looks like a hoot.  I would love to get a group together to go the next time they do one of these events.  If you can make it this time, check it out and let me know the fun you had.  I may pop in...you never know.
