25th Annual AIDS Walk in Volunteer Park on Saturday September 24th

I remember the first days of the Seattle AIDS Walk when it was a small(er) event and there was still little known about HIV/AIDS.  I volunteered registering walkers on the day of the walk for several years and stuffed various packets in the office.  It was one of the few things that I felt I could do during a time of such helpless feelings.

By 1991 my world was shattered when I learned my brother Steven who I was extremely close to was HIV+.  I barely had any time to process the news when he had a freak accident causing a hairline fracture to a rib.  He received poor medical attention due to his HIV+ status and went into septic shock followed by a coma and death.  It has taken me many years to come to terms with the loss of him in my life.  I know many others have had similar experiences or feelings due to HIV/AIDS.

I continue to wear a "Until there is a Cure" bracelet in his honor.  My heart is still heavy with the loss of my brother, friend and confidant and some days are better or worse than others.  The AIDS Walk is a great way to honor those that have passed and to assist those that are fighting these illnesses.  Check out their website for registration information.
From the heart,
Ms T.

Sex Change Hospital featuring Dr. Marci Bowers is transforming TV

Currently Sex Change Hospital, a six part series is playing ON Demand via Comcast (Discovery Fit & Health - Channel 222 in the Seattle area) and on several future dates during August.  Each 1 hour show tells the story of 2 individuals changing their gender from either male to female or female to male.  It features Dr. Marci Bowers a well known and beloved Seattle surgeon who relocated to Trinidad, Colorado to preform sex changes at the Mount San Rafael Hospital.

Dr. Bowers has an amazingly personal and empathetic bedside manner I imagine in part due to her own experience with gender reassignment surgery over 10 years ago.  She has a strong medical background as an OB-GYN in surgical gynecology and has delivered over 3000 babies.  She relocated to Trinidad which has become known as the sex change capital of the world as so many gender reassignments are preformed there.

The town is amazingly supportive of the trans community that flocks to Trinidad for surgery originally under Dr. Stanley Biber who preformed his first male to female sex change in 1969.  Dr. Bowers took over his practice in 2003 when Dr. Biber retired.  Dr. Biber passed away at the age of 82 in 2006.

I have a bit of melancholy as I watch these shows as I had the experience of going to Trinidad, supporting my then partner/future husband through gender reassignment surgery.  I walked those very halls, did the consults and got to know Marci (who I just love, love, love) over the course of many years.  It is a part of my life that changed my views in so many ways and made me an even stronger advocate for full gender equality.  Parts of my own identity changed and I understood things more fully than before I had this experience.  Ms T.

Outdoor Movies at Cal Anderson Park means summer is here?

There are 3 remaining movies as part of the Rock n Roll Fantasy at Cal Anderson Park that are put on by Three Dollar Cinema starting at dusk.  I do enjoy packing a picnic and sprawling on the grass watching a cult classic or at least a gay cult considered classic under the beautiful starry warm Seattle nights.  Ok...so I lapsed into a bit of fantasy as I know we are a wee bit unhappy with our weather this summer.

You can still pack a nice snack, bring blankets and enjoy the wonderful people watching opportunity (pwo) as it will be splendid!

LABYRINTH August 5
To rescue her baby brother from the clutches of The Goblin King (David Bowie), a daydreaming girl (Jennifer Connelly) must navigate her way through a maze loaded with Jim Henson's magical puppet creations and captivating musical moments.

The Apple August 12
Set in an ultra campy future world of 1994, this mind-blowing, LOL rock opera follows a naïve singing duo struggling to save themselves (and the world!) from the evil plans of a powerful music mogul, Mr. Boogalow. (1980, 86 min.)

Footloose August 19
In an uptight town where rock music and dancing are against the rules, newcomer Kevin Bacon shakes things up by fighting for his right to get down and cut loose. (1984, 107 min.)

Enjoy!

Father's Day at the West Seattle Market with Chef Jacob Wiegner

One of the enjoyable aspects of our summer is the ability to shop at the outdoor food markets. West Seattle's year round market is a joy with their selection of produce and fun events.

Master Chef Jacob Wiegner will be teaching how to grill summer veggies, fruits and meats on Father's Day. This is perfect information to match with the wonderful local foods we can purchase. He will share yummy ideas and free recipes.

There will be a FREE drawing on June 19 for a free Weber grill!! Anyone who shops the market on Father's Day can enter to win at the market info tent. Another draw for me is the Husky Deli ice cream that will be free in honor of Father's Day sponsored by Husky and berry farmers.

Chef Jacob Wiegner trained at Le Cordon-Bleu London, worked in top kitchens in London and Florida, and has spent the past two years as sous-chef at Olivar on Capitol Hill. He now has his own 40-seat restaurant, Blackboard Bistro, on California Ave SW in West Seattle. The emphasis, Wiegner says, is a nostalgic nod to the chef's past, prepared with fresh Northwest ingredients.

Thanks to the Neighborhood Farmers Alliance for these tidbits.

Capitol Hill Garage Sale, 10a-3p

The Federal Republian Park is the new location for the Capitol Hill Garage Sale, Saturday, June 11th. There will be tables galore including our Ruth who would love for you to stop by and say hello. She is raising money for the FedRep Park Project like many others are.

You will find that FedRep is not the only place that is hopping tomorrow as many on Capitol Hill take advantage of this community day by hosting sales at their residences. It will be a great day for bargains and to visit with kewl peeps. A map of some of the sale locations can be found here.

If you are participating and need to know what to do with any leftovers they have a grand plan as your tax deductible donations will benefit children and adults with disabilities. Bring your collecting, clothing & household items to the Federal/Republican community space from 2:30-4:00pm (June 11th).

Or you can drop off at these locations:
