Blogger is acting naughty...

I am not so happy with blogger as she has not been minding me this last week.  Instead of sending out my posts to you as they are scheduled, they have not been delayed for days!  It is most frustrating as by the time you got the Friday MLK day notice the event has passed.  The way it works is I select a two hour time frame for when blogger sends the GayZette to you.  Unfortunately, blogger hasn't been sending you anything on schedule so I have manually picked the next time period or have resynced the blog to attempt to 'force' a send,  It has not worked, much to my frustration. 

This is a game I play for hours each day and I have begun to feel like blogger is the toddler throwing a toy on the ground and I am the mommy picking it up.  The good news is that the events ARE placed on the Seattle Announcements Calendar so if you have a habit of looking at it you will miss nothing.  I know that blogger eventually self corrects as it does have glitches from time to time.  Ah ha, I even have a label for 'feedburner issues' and that is my story and I am sticking to it.

GSBA Women at the Top

2010 starts another GSBA Program Year introducing our 2010 Women at the Top Mixers.  To celebrate the amazing leadership of our women members, we will hold a quarterly Women at the Top cocktail party. This event will be held at a fun venue and at each Women at the Top Cocktail Hour we will invite a community leader from a nonprofit that serves women to give a overview of what they do and how we can participate.

To kickoff 2010, our first Women at the Top will be on January 28th at the top of the Renaissance Hotel in their Visions Room. Our guest will be Barbara bg Nabors-Glass from Seattle Goodwill. bg is a dynamic leader in our community and we are thrilled she is starting off our series. And, the Visions Room is gorgeous with a 180 degree view. Join us and bring friends to our first Women at the Top.

Please bring books to donate to Seattle Goodwill if you would like.

I would like to extend an invitation to you my beloved readers to attend 'Maggie Growls' the documentary film portrait of how Maggie Kuhn started the Grey Panthers with me on Friday the 22nd at 7pm (56 min).  It seems very relevant with the current employment situation and I think would be fun to attend together and grab a cup of something afterwards and visit.

I list FREE movies every Friday night that the Wallingford Neighbors show at the Keystone Congregational United Church of Christ and I love that this is community oriented.  It is by donation which takes the pressure off of our budgets during these financially tough times.  They will follow the movie with an optional community discussion on active, vivacious aging; intergenerational connections and future living options such as Co-Housing: both Senior & Intergenerational.  Send me an email and let me know if you are coming, I would love to have your company!

MAGGIE GROWLS is a documentary film portrait of the amazing, canny, lusty, charming and unstoppable Maggie Kuhn (1905-1995), who founded the Gray Panthers in 1970 after being forced to retire from a job she loved. Her outrage and determination fueled a political chain reaction that forever changed the lives of older Americans, repealing mandatory retirement laws and proving that 'old' is not a dirty word.

With a disarming mixture of humor, shock value and common sense, Maggie went on to champion universal health care, nursing home reform, shared housing and consumer protection.  Out of what political activist Ralph Nader called 'the most significant retirement in modern American history,' Maggie created one of the most potent social movements of the century - one that was committed to justice, peace and fairness to all, regardless of age.

'Milk' Movie, potluck, socializing, discussion - donations accepted

The Sharma Center is having a potluck and showing the moving, inspirational and unnecessarily tragic true story of gay activist Harvey Milk in 'Milk'.  They are waving any membership for the evening of January 25th with the potluck starting at 6pm, movie at 7pm and discussion to follow the movie.  Ms T

Freddie Mercury's lover Jim Hutton dead at 60

If you were gay and can remember any of the 70's you knew who Freddie Mercury was of the band Queen.  Even if it was not your music style, his story was somewhat riveting and now another part of it has come full circle with his last partner passing away on New Year's Day.  Ms T

The gay lover and life partner of the late and great singer  Freddie Mercury passed away last week.  Jim Hutton had lived with former Queen singer and flamboyant Freddie  Mercury for six years prior to the singer’s death from an AIDS-related illness in 1991.

Jim Hutton died at his home on New Year’s Day from complications from the battle he’d been fighting against cancer  in his last few years.   He was aged  60.  Hutton  had  worked as Mercury’s hairdresser and the singer left him  £500,000 and a plot of land in his will.

Jim Hutton had also tested positive for HIV in 1990 but, at the time he kept the news of his status a secret from many including  Mercury himself.   However,  he later told him shortly before the singer passed away.

Hutton was buried on Sunday in Bennekerry, Ireland,  on what would have been his 61st birthday.
