At Sistah Sinemea - October, we had about 30 womyn in attendance, the size was perfect for networking and great conversation! Watermelon Woman is my favorite Sistah Sinema movie (is that like a mom choosing favorite??). However, most importantly, I LOVE Cherly Dunye! I really enjoyed our conversation with her.

Sistah Sinema presents Watermelon Woman Friday November 4

I attended Sistah Sinema in October and enjoyed both films Finding Juilet and Robin's Hood with about 30 other women.  I will admit I was exhausted as was one of my dear friends who attended with me and we both dozed a little bit through Robin's Hood (yikes).  I am sure drooling on my dates shoulder was umber sexy!  We enjoyed our own mini-discussion of the films and look forward to attending another event and I encourage you to go if you have not had the opportunity.

November 4th at 8pm will feature Watermelon Woman, the first African American, lesbian full-length film.  As with most events, Sistah Sinema will utilize Skype and on Friday will have the legendary Cheryl Dunye, Skyped in for the after discussion.  Enjoy seeing Cheryl Dunye in this clip as I did as she is hot (did I just write that?).

Sistah Sinema has a couple of upcoming events that I am excited about!  Next Friday (October 7th) I will be attending the much awaited Finding Juilet and Robin's Hood.  I am so happy that Sistah Sinema is a part of the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival!  Stay tuned...Ms T.

This month will be a double-hitter with Finding Juilet by Kanithea Powell who will be present for the screening followed by Robin's Hood by Sara Millman at Chao Bar and Bistro on 12th and Pike. Both Kanithea and Sara will be on-hand during the Q&A!

After the movie, stay for a night of gaymes, streaming neo-soul music, and Chao's amazing happy hour menu until 1:30am!

Sistah Sinema

Sistah Sinema is a movie event showcasing Black womyn in Queer roles. Each showing will be followed by a moderated discussion section. Sistah Sinema was created to showcase the nuances of Black Queer Womyn culture. It is hoped that the movies will serve as a vehicle to foster honest dialogue on struggles and opportunities unique to Black Queer Womyn. While discussion will focus on Black Queer Womyn, all members of the Queer community are invited to attend.

Sistah Sinema will be held every first and third Saturday of the month, with possible schedule changes for holidays and to coordinate producer schedules.  Sistah Sinema is currently operational in Seattle and will launch in New York, Saturday, May 28th with plans to start in Atlanta and Portland by the end of 2011. Herstory of Sistah Sinema - Seattle

The founder of Sistah Sinema - Seattle was inspired by the warmth and family of three butch Black lesbians who, with their respective femmes, would get together every Sunday for dinner. The three friends referred to their gatherings as Sunday Dinner and would attend rain or shine, in good health or in bad as long as they were in the city.

The founder thought to herself, all lesbians of color should be blessed to share and have this sense of community with each other and other members of the queer community.   

Sistah Sinema - Seattle started January 15, 2011 at Vibe Bar and Grill. The inaugural event screening Family by Faith Trimel had ten attendees.

Sistah Sinema's Series The Beautiful Struggle: Overcoming Discrimination

You may have heard about Sistah Sinema, that combines films about Black womyn in Queer roles followed by a moderated discussion section.  They began this past January in Seattle and are expanding to New York City Memorial Day Weekend.  The newest series is 'The Beautiful Struggle: Overcoming Discrimination' that will screen Dream Deferred:  The Sakia Gunn Story and Training Rules.

 Dreams Deferred: The Sakia Gunn Story

This documentary tells the little known story of Sakia Gunn, a 15 year old student who was
fatally stabbed in a gay hate crime in Newark, New Jersey. Sakia was an Aggressive. Sakia
held promise as a basketball player and was an 'A' student.

Dreams Deferred: The Sakia Gunn Story depicts the homophobia that caused this murder and questions the lack of media coverage of the murder of a Black Gay teenager. The documentary follows the reaction of the Newark community where several rallies and vigils were held, galvanizing the community and prompting several LGBT organizations to form, including the Newark Pride Alliance and Sakia Gunn Aggressives & Femmes, as well as a scholarship fund in her name.

Training Rules celebrates the start of the WNBA season. The Seatte Storm’s first regular season game is Saturday, June 4th at 12noon against Phoenix Mercury, 2007 and 2009 WNBA champions. The New York Liberty season will start Sunday, June 5th against the Atlanta Dream.

Training Rules documents the discrimination experienced by Lesbian basketball players at Penn State University for nearly three decades under Coach Renee Portland. The lead protagonist is Jen Harris, African - American star basketball player.
