On Seattle Announcements Calendar.

The last week...

This last week I was able to attend and check out a few places that are listed on the Seattle Announcements Calendar.  We had dinner on Saturday at Olympia Pizza on 15th and they have expanded into the space next door and now have a great looking bar.  In fact part of THE actual bar is from the old J & M.  We then dropped in at HotFlash which was packed with a full crowd.  According to Pauline it boasted its largest crowd to date.  I was glad people had left as we could still move around and talk with friends.  We got there a bit late and stayed just for a bit.

I finally made it to the Little Red Bistro and it was worth the wait.  It has a very nice atmosphere to enjoy relaxing in during the day.  Plenty of comfortable seating next to windows covered with lush draperies.  Books fill the window ledges for perusing and I immediately found one on 'chocolate' that I began drooling over.  I was able to visit with friends and work on trying to get the problems with this blog not posting resolved via their wi-fi (unsucessful on the blog part - lol).  I will be going back next week to the Day Spa and let you know what I think...I can't wait!

Tonight I enjoyed the quite large group at Wallingford's Meaningful Movies by Wallingford Neighbors for Peace and Justice showing of Maggie Growls.  It was a touching portrayal of Maggie Kuhn who started the Gray Panthers.  She was an extremely feisty woman who created change through her unconventional ways.  Most of her methods were quite effective in the movement to create equality for older folks.  The one thing she suggested that created disagreement in her own group was to suggest that due to the large number of single older women that they should try being lesbians.  She was serious...they were appalled.  She was unconventional in many ways including taking a male lover 50 years her junior and having several affairs.  When asked how she had managed to remain unmarried she replied 'sheer luck'.   It was a good movie and I will return to view others with this group and invite you to do the same.  Ms T

Check the GayZette online

Please come out to the website and check for the articles that were not sent out during Feedburners downtime this past week.  There are 9 that were not sent.  Whenever you don't hear from me for a few days, it never hurts to check the calendar as I keep it updated and it is a great resource for what to do.  As with all technical programs they don't work 100% of the time.  Drives me absolutely nuts as I try to fix stuff that sometimes is beyond my technical fixing ability.  Thank you all for being such a great audience!  Ms T

Denise King, Activist for Hate Crimes dies

I have often said it is those of us that can fight on behalf of our loved ones that can effect change due to our unique position.  I am always moved by the mothers (parents) that stand by their LBGTQI children as that is not always the case.  Denise King had great compassion for others even in the worst moments of her life.  May she continue to touch others in death as in life.

Denise King, Mother of Hate Crime Victim, Dies

Denise King, a gay rights advocate in South Florida, died of a heart attack on New Year’s Eve. King’s son, Simmie Williams who was gay, was gunned down in February 2008. Since his unresolved murder, King made educating others about the violence LGBT people face a priority:

The Sun-Sentinel wrote:

Since her son’s death, Mrs. King 'brought the conversation of love, acceptance and compassion into a community where black [gays and lesbians] are invisible,' said Michael Emanuel Rajner, a co-founder of Transgender Equality Rights Initiatives, who became a family friend after the murder.

'The night of her son’s viewing, she left early because she had gotten a call from someone that evening that there was a youth, about 16, thrown out of his home because he was openly gay,' Rajner said.

'Denise, not even knowing the child’s name, hit the streets with her car up and down Sistrunk looking for this child. She would take them in. Her home became this safe haven for people to run. In her pain she was moved to make certain no child was turned away.'

Mrs. King’s aunt said she was committed to justice.

'Everything she did, she did it from her heart as a mother,' said Rose Barnes, of Fort Lauderdale.

Events for 'Free' drop down tab is a WIP

Please note I am creating an area for Free events as a 'Drop down' tab on the right side of the blog.  It is no where near done and until blogger sends my posts in a timely manner I do not have all the web addresses to enter in the code.  I appreciate your patience.  It will be a great tool when I get it done as you will be able to look through the Free event options and take your pick by Day and type of Event!  Stay tuned!  Ms T

Blogger is acting naughty...

I am not so happy with blogger as she has not been minding me this last week.  Instead of sending out my posts to you as they are scheduled, they have not been delayed for days!  It is most frustrating as by the time you got the Friday MLK day notice the event has passed.  The way it works is I select a two hour time frame for when blogger sends the GayZette to you.  Unfortunately, blogger hasn't been sending you anything on schedule so I have manually picked the next time period or have resynced the blog to attempt to 'force' a send,  It has not worked, much to my frustration. 

This is a game I play for hours each day and I have begun to feel like blogger is the toddler throwing a toy on the ground and I am the mommy picking it up.  The good news is that the events ARE placed on the Seattle Announcements Calendar so if you have a habit of looking at it you will miss nothing.  I know that blogger eventually self corrects as it does have glitches from time to time.  Ah ha, I even have a label for 'feedburner issues' and that is my story and I am sticking to it.
