But bestselling writer and physician Gabor Mat (In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts), who has worked with the severely addicted on Vancouver's Skid Row, explains the phenomenon by describing its root causes - a complex interplay of personal history, emotional and neurological development, brain chemistry, and Western culture.
