BUTCH Voices Conference Seeks Planning Committee members & Submissions

BUTCH Voices Portland

2010 Regional Conference - October 2, 2010

We are looking for interested people to serve on the planning committee, as well as community members who would like to lead workshops and discussions or participate in visual and performing arts presentations. People wanting to participate in the BUTCH Voices Portland Regional Conference can also email BVPortland2010@gmail.com with their interest and questions.

This is our Call for Submissions. We welcome workshop ideas of all kinds, films, performances, skill shares, especially on topics which speak to the cultural, sexual, emotional, physical, and psychological relationships that arise in the lives of Butches, Studs, Tombois, Aggressives, Machas, etc. We are open to all perspectives–queer, feminist, womanist, neither or beyond! We particularly encourage proposals by and for people-over sixty, under twenty-one, working-class, and people of color or persons with disabilities.


Portland, OR will host one of four BUTCH Voices Regional Conferences in 2010. Last year's ground-breaking BUTCH Voices national conference in Oakland, CA brought together hundreds of self identified Butches, Studs, Aggressives and other similar identified folks, as well as many allies for conversation, workshops, entertainment, and good ol' fashioned butch bonding. The Queer Resource Center at Portland State University is co-sponsoring this event.

Our hope for the BUTCH Voices Portland Regional Conference is to provide a similar, regionally-focused event with the same awesome, open spirit and attitude. We will also be including substantial programming around health and wellness.


Deadline for Submissions for BUTCH Voices Portland is August 1, 2010. Please submit your proposal or abstract to bvportland2010@gmail.com, along with a short bio of yourself and any other presenter.


These regional conferences will be an amazing opportunity to create local and regional community awareness, to share butch voices, and critical thinking about who we are. BUTCH Voices Regional Conferences are a place to: talk about why we identify in the ways we do, learn how to tell our stories, address femininity, masculinity, discuss areas of overlap and intersection that are none of the above. We will talk about sex, embodiment, community building, our physical and mental health, and issues that stand in the way of Butch-identified solidarity and justice. Most importantly, BUTCH Voices is the place where we can be ourselves with one another.

Gay Bingo Frequently Asked Questions (in alphabetical order)

Bar: Gay Bingo offers a full bar including beer from Pyramid Breweries, wine and bubbles from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, premium liquor and specialty theme cocktails from Sazerac Liquor. Proceeds from the Gay Bingo bar go to benefit Lifelong AIDS Alliance.

Check In: Gay Bingo programs and games are picked up at the check in station at the entrance of Fremont Studios. Programs may be picked up under the name of the person who made the reservations. At this time, all outstanding payments must be made in order to receive programs and games. Cash and check only will be accepted at the reservations table. All other guests may proceed inside after they have shown their id at the door. Any tickets not claimed by 7:00pm will be released for sale to the public.

Costumes: Costumes are encouraged but not required at Gay Bingo. Each month has a special theme (please see event schedule for details), and dressing in costumes can be a great way to add extra fun and excitement to the evening. A costume contest, led by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, is held each event, and the winners receive great prizes for participation (prizes vary from month to month).

Credit Cards/ATM: Fremont Studios offers two ATMs onsite.

Credit cards are not accepted at check in for ticket payment at the door, please bring cash or check for outstanding ticket payments. However, credit cards are accepted at the Gay Bingo Marketplace, the Gay Bingo Food Court and the Gay Bingo Bar.

Daubers: Daubers are not included with the price of admission for regular tickets. Queen for a Day seating does include a complimentary dauber per paying guest. Daubers can be purchased for $2 at the Gay Bingo Marketplace. Guests are also welcome to bring there own daubers. Proceeds from the sale of daubers benefit LLAA.

Event Details: Doors open at 6:00pm. The event begins at 7:00pm and ends between 9:30-10:00pm.

Food: No outside food or beverages permitted at the event. Concessions at Gay Bingo courtesy of White Linen Catering. Chicken Soup Brigade, Lifelong’s client food program provides fresh baked cookies for sale.  Proceeds form the Gay Bingo food court benefit LLAA.

General Admission: General Admission tickets can be purchased in advance at the thrift store, or on the night of the event. General Admission tickets will only be sold one month at a time. All seating for general admission is on a first come, first served basis. General Admission tables will be clearly marked as such on the seating charts at the event.

How to make reservations: Email first and last name, the month(s) you are interested in attending, and the number of guests you would like tickets for to gaybingo@llaa.org. Lifelong staff will respond with a reservation confirmation email, and more details regarding how to pay for  tickets.

Identification: Gay Bingo  is a 21+ event. All guests will be required to show valid photo ID for entry. We are unable to admit anyone without ID, even if you have purchased tickets for the evening. We appreciate your cooperation in advance.

Night of Ticket Sales: If the event is not sold out, tickets are sold at the door on the night of the event. All tickets sold at the door receive general admission seating, and tickets are sold on a first come first served basis. To find out if a Gay Bingo event is sold out please email gaybingo@llaa.org or call the Gay Bingo hotline at 206-323-0069. Sold out events will clearly state that they are SOLD OUT.

Payment: Due to Washington State Gambling Commission regulations, Lifelong cannot accept full payment for your table via credit cards. Because $5 of every ticket is taxed by the WSGC, this portion must be paid by check or cash. However, you may pay for a portion of your table on your credit card and remit the rest of your payment with a check or cash. Check payment can be mailed to: Lifelong AIDS Alliance attn: Gay Bingo 1002 E. Seneca St. Seattle, WA 98122. Please include refer to the name the reservations are made under and the month(s) you will be attending on the memo line of all checks. Please make reservations by emailing gaybingo@llaa.org before sending payment.

Seating Arrangements: Guests who have made reservations via email or phone will have reserved seating. Gay Bingo tables accommodate up to 18 guests. Parties will be seated together in order to fill the table. Upon arrival, Lifelong’s friendly ushers will show you and your party to your seats. If your party has requested special seating accommodations, our staff will try their best to accommodate your needs. Night of seat changes are difficult to accommodate, and cannot be guaranteed. Advanced notice of special seating requests is greatly appreciated. All reasonable seating requests will be considered.

Special Accommodations: At every Gay Bingo event, Lifelong provides ASL interpreters for our guests. If your party has guests who use this service, please let our staff know when making reservations if you would like to be seated closer to the stage.

For guests in wheelchairs or scooters, please let staff know if you would prefer aisle seating when you make your reservations. Fremont Studios is ADA accessible; a ramp can be found at the main entrance on 35th Street.

Special Games: Special Games are not included with the price of admission, and can be purchased at the Gay Bingo Marketplace or from one of our Special Games volunteers. Each Special Game is $2 to play, except for the $1,000 prize Blackout Game, which sells for $4. Special Games can also be purchased in a pack with all four games for $10. Special Games prize packages range from $300- $1000 in great prizes (prizes vary month to month).

Tax receipts: LLAA does not issue tax deduction receipts for the purchase of Gay Bingo tickets. Gay Bingo is a gambling event, and the price of your ticket includes admission and ten bingo games. It, therefore, does not qualify as a donation to Lifelong AIDS Alliance. Tax receipts can be issued for donations to Lifelong AIDS Alliance at Gay Bingo, this excludes the purchase of games, merchandise, food or alcohol. Please speak with our finance table at Gay Bingo; they will take down your information and issue you a tax receipt following the event for any donations made.

Ticket Includes: Regular tickets include entrance to Gay Bingo and 10 regular games eligible for $100 cash prize per game. Queen for a Day tickets include entrance to Gay Bingo, 10 regular games per guest, one complimentary Bingo dauber per guest, snacks delivered tableside, and one complimentary alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink per guest.

Who attends Gay Bingo: Gay Bingo is a 21 and over event intended for adults of any sexual orientation who wish to support the vital services provided by Lifelong AIDS Alliance. Some of the content at Gay Bingo is considered “adult” and is recommended for mature audiences. Over 750 guests attend each month.

Betty White on Saturday Night Live - 11:30 pm Channel 5

For those of us that think Facebook has no value, we can remember that Betty White will be on Saturday Night Live tonight due to a campaign started on Facebook.  Close to 500,000 people cast their desire for Betty to host and she acquiesced.  I think it so rocks that at 88 years old Betty is getting acknowledged while she is alive and can feel the love of her fans.  She has always delivered naughtiness in just the right way that she doesn't offend (I actually don't mind the offending but...).

I have enjoyed so many of her shows over the years.  It is NOT reality and for that I am grateful.  She has a new show beginning soon and I am thrilled that someone of her talent will be on TV again.  I will be watching.

Here's to Betty!  I will be watching her tonight and smiling as it feels good to know there are people like Betty in the world and people like us that care.

Seattle International Film Festival Schedule is online May 20th - June 13th

I doubt that on this incredible Saturday that you stayed inside to read the official 2010 SIFF Guide BUT I bet a cup of cava and an outdoor cafe is the perfect place to enjoy this free guide that is online as of today.  We already know Ms T loves free for me and free for you!  The entire festival schedule is available for you to browse and it has so much information in it you may need to go to 2 or 3 cafe's.

Pick the films that you can't stand not seeing, the ones you know you will love to see and the ones you don't want to miss.  Ok, so...I want to see many of them already and can't decide.  I am not one to believe what the critics say (if I want to see a film, no paid talking head will deter ME) but I do think it is a great idea to take a peek at the upcoming press about this fab film fest.

SIFF Cinema is located in the Nesholm Family Lecture Hall on the lower level of Marion Oliver McCaw Hall at Seattle Center. The main entrance is directly below the skybridge from the Mercer garage at the Corner of 3rd Avenue North and Mercer Street. In addition to the Mercer garage, parking is available on the street (metered and zoned) or in adjacent pay parking lots and garages.

Gay Skate is Wednesday the 12th.  It is a great community social event that you can bring the entire family to.  Any age is welcome to fall down while your family and friends take pictures and post them on facebook - lol (I wish I was kidding).

15th Anniversary of Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk May 14th and 15th
