Opening Night - Translations: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival - Becoming Chaz

Tonight is the Opening Party for Translations: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival.  We are so fortunate to have this event in our community!  The festival started last night with a free showing of Sold: Examining the T in TV Advertising.
2011 Translations
The 6th Annual Transgender Film Festival
May 12-15

Becoming Chaz is the highlighted film tonight and then it is party time!

A small sidenote:  I spent 5 hours yesterday creating posts on the film festival and posts for next week when blogspot 'went down'.  Today, I found NONE of my posts saved!  Yesterday they did and today they are gone-poof.  Therefore, I am hurriedly putting together the posts again, minus the glitz so at least the information is on the blog and emailed via the GayZette.  Ms T.

Becoming Chaz

Opening Night
Friday, May 13
7pm
AMC Pacific Place
600 Pine Street (4th floor)
Seattle, WA 98101
Growing up as Sonny and Cher’s adorable golden-haired daughter in a body he felt wasn’t his own was a burden it took Chaz Bono years to transcend. BECOMING CHAZ invites us along on Chaz’s brave and remarkable journey of transformation. As hormone shots give way to top surgery, easy going and unflappable Chaz beams with a sense of liberation and goes public with his story, putting a very public face on a widely misunderstood issue. But with his gregarious girlfriend struggling with the new realities of living with a man, it’s made clear that sex change isn’t solely a physical transition.
Intimate and nakedly honest, the film reveals the humanity and courage it takes for Chaz to ultimately embrace his true self. His moving struggle will reverberate profoundly for anyone to whom authenticity matters.
BECOMING CHAZ, Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato; 2011; USA; 80 min

LOST IN THE CROWD follows a group of trans and queer youth living homeless in the streets of New York City, most having been rejected by their families. Shot over eight years, this groundbreaking documentary reveals the trials they must face fighting to survive in a world hostile to their very existence, and the dreams and desires that keep them alive.

Girl Inside Saturday, May 14
3pm
Northwest Film Forum
This beautiful,  heartwarming coming of age story is both an intimate portrait and a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be a woman. Following 26-year-old Madison during a crucial three years of her transition from male to female, GIRL INSIDE tracks her emotional, intellectual and spiritual journey of self-discovery that is as important – if not more than – the physical journey of hormones and surgery. Sharing the spotlight is Vivien, Madison’s glamorous 80-year-old grandmother, who has taken on the job of advising her on all things feminine. While Vivien’s attempts to school Madison in old-fashioned codes of fashion and behavior are often hilarious, the juxtaposition of two vastly different experiences of womanhood, from very different generations, raises profound issues about the nature of gender, femininity and sexuality.

Emmanuel (Clément Hervieu-Léger) has always had bad luck stemming from the same predicament; a desperate desire for gender reassignment surgery.  So when a high risk underworld opportunity comes along that could score enough money to pay for her surgery, plus a first-class flight to Bangkok and a buttock lift to boot, Emmanuel leaps before looking.  Based on the French novel of Laurent Martin, this film noir thriller follows a desperate girl willing to do anything to change her luck and achieve her ultimate goal.

Photos of Angie

Sunday, May 15
1pm

Crimes committed against people because of their gender identity, expression or status are all too common. What makes PHOTOS OF ANGIE unique is that this story doesn’t end with just another court case, but boldly goes where others leave off, exploring the transphobia of the killer himself and the culture that surrounds and supports it. PHOTOS OF ANGIE tells the complete story of what motivates this violence, providing more accurate and compelling insight that may one day help bring these crimes to a stop.

XXWHY: A Transgender Story

XXWHY follows the thoughts and feelings of a young transgender man and his girlfriend living openly in India. Exploring his feelings about not having been born in a male body and the loss of experiences he yearns to have, the film is a very rare look at the life and culture of an Indian FTM making his way on the Asian continent. XXWHY was part of the specially curated KASHISH SHORTS 2010; eight Indian Queer Films from KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival that showcase the diversity of Indian queer experience and expression in contemporary times.

4:30pm
Northwest Film Forum
Welcome to Schmuckstraße, which literally translates to Jewelry Road. This is where the 'Jewels Of The Street,' Eva, Kelly and a sorority of closely knit working girls earn a living in St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany.  Like a real life PRETTY WOMAN documentary, you’ll peek into the trials, tribulations and triumphs that these Venezuelan women endure to support one another.  The true gem of this documentary is the excellent cinematography and editing, drawing you into the girls’ stories and connecting with even their smallest victories.

He is My Girl

Sunday, May 15
7:30pm
Northwest Film Forum
Clarinetist Simon Eskenazy has so much going on that he can’t finish his Klezmer record. His ailing, hypochondriac mother wants to move in with him and his ex-wife Rosalie and their son suddenly resurface after 10 years. He’s also trying to seduce a young gay man while carrying on a relationship with Nair, a young transgender Arab. But it’s Nair who helps Simon get his life in order, first by becoming nurse to his mother, and then showing him what he’s really looking for. A wry, intelligent 'rom-com,' HE IS MY GIRL is a memorable story of lost souls finding love.
